7th China-Latin American Countries Infrastructure Forum held in Macao, highlighting green innovation

The 7th China-Latin American Countries Infrastructure Forum was successfully held in Macao from 22 to 23 July. Assistant Minister of Commerce Ren Hongbin attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Colombian Minister of Transport Ángela María Orozco Gómez delivered a video message. Ambassadors or Chargés d'affaires from 13 Latin American and Caribbean countries in China, more than 500 representatives from Chinese and foreign government departments, financial institutions, business associations, enterprises and think tanks attended the Forum.

Ren Hongbin said that President Xi Jinping pointed out that China will promote the high-quality development of the "Belt and Road" and provide new opportunities for the world with China's new development. Infrastructure is the key and priority area for mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Latin America. Green development is the underlying theme of Belt and Road cooperation, as well as a new driving force for China-Latin America practical cooperation. This year's Forum highlights the theme of "Green Innovation", aiming to better leverage the guiding role of government policies, expand new areas of infrastructure cooperation, and open up new areas of mutually beneficial cooperation in the post-pandemic era. China is willing to work together with Latin American and Caribbean countries to build a "Green Silk Road", promote high-quality development of China-Latin America infrastructure cooperation, and make positive contributions to post-pandemic economic recovery and well-being of people in all countries.

Orozco expressed her heartfelt thanks to President Xi Jinping for his video address to the Colombian people in March this year, and spoke highly of the results of practical cooperation between the two countries. She said that Colombia and China are experiencing an important historical moment in their relations, with positive progress in all areas of cooperation. Transport infrastructure construction is a pillar of Colombia's development and is of great significance for promoting connectivity, job creation and poverty reduction. Latin American and Caribbean countries hope to further strengthen cooperation with China on infrastructure and deepen people-to-people exchanges and ties.

The China-Latin America Infrastructure Cooperation Forum is the first professional forum for cooperation in the infrastructure sector under the framework of the China-Latin America Forum, hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China and organized by China International Contractors Association (CHINCA) and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute. the Forum has been held every year since 2015.

Latin America and the Caribbean is the second largest overseas investment destination and the third largest contracting market for China. Up to now, the cumulative value of construction contracts signed by Chinese enterprises in Latin America has exceeded US$220 billion, with a completed turnover of nearly US$150 billion. From January to May this year, Chinese enterprises worked hard to overcome the impact of the epidemic, with the value of newly-signed contracts in Latin America rising 52.4% year-on-year.
